Measurement of Urban Air Quality

In Edinburgh, two types of sensors capable of measuring various urban environmental parameters will be trialed:

    • GeoTech AQMesh pods, which are fixed to a given location around the streets of Edinburgh
    • Atknea LEOs (Little Environment Observatories), which are personal sensor packs that can be conveniently carried around by people as they go about their day to day lives.

GeoTech AQMesh Pods

24 Geotech AQMesh Pods will be located at a number of fixed points around the Edinburgh centre and surrounding area. The map below shows approximately where they are located - see how many you can spot!!

Data on the parameters being measured is collected by the Pods and automatically transmitted to a secure server for processing.  The data is then processed, corrected and the final readings are produced.

Parameters measured by AQMesh

  • Nitrogen Oxide
  • Nitrogen Dioxide
  • Ozone
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Particulate count
  • Pressure
  • Temperature
  • Relative Humidity
  • Noise

We will use the information collected from these pods to help develop maps showing the variability in air quality across the City of Edinburgh. We will provide more information on these in the coming months.

Atknea LEO Personal sensor packs

The Atknea personal sensor packs are small light weight devices that are designed to be easily worn by persons interested in their urban air quality. These sensor packs are equipped with temperature, relative humidity, NO2, O3 and CO sensors.

The sensor pack is designed to work with an android smartphone. The smartphone will also provide GPS position, and user activity data. The data collected whilst personal to the individual can also be aggregated to provide information on urban air quality to the wider community.

We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Atknea LEOs and once received, will be undertaking some usability pilot testing.

Wish to obtain information on Edinburgh air pollution now?

The devices being used in CITI-SENSE and the data generated from these are currently being trialled.  In the meantime information about air quality in Edinburgh and elsewhere in Scotland can be obtained from Air Quality in Scotland,
